The Three Pigs was written and illustrated by David Wiesner in 2001. This book was the Caldecott Medal winner for 2002. David Wiesner is a 5 time Caldecott artist: Tuesday (1992), The Three Pigs (2002) and Flotsam (2007) were all Caldecott Medals and Sector 7 (2000) and Free Fall (1988) were Caldecott Honors.
Weisner is a truly talented artist. The illustrations in this book are remarkable. Weisner takes the story of the threee pigs and turns it into a magical journey. My favorite part is when the pictures start to come alive and jump out of the story. Weisner even changes the style of the artwork to show a difference when the animals “come to life.”
My favorite book by Weisner is Free Fall. This book is completely wordless and Weisner has no problems telling the story of a boy’s adventure through pictures. Weisner continues his tradition of excellence throughout all of his stories. I highly recommend any of them.
